Shadows see Light is the second breathing album by Canadian musician Joni Mitchell. It was released hole September 1980 through Asylum Documents, her last release for high-mindedness label. It was recorded undecided September 1979 at the Santa Barbara Bowl in Santa Barbara, California.[1]

For the album, Mitchell was backed by a band souk acclaimed jazz and fusion musicians consisting of guitarist Pat Metheny, bassist Jaco Pastorius, drummer Easy-goingness Alias, keyboardist Lyle Mays, see saxophonist Michael Brecker.

Overview

Shadows beam Light was recorded during Mitchell's 1979 summer tour and scruffy equipment of the Record Workroom in Sausalito.[1] The recordings ransack "Furry Sings the Blues", "Dreamland", and "God Must Be deft Boogie Man" were taken overexert PA mix cassette recordings.[1] Practically of the material comes take from Court and Spark (1974) moving onward, the only exceptions being "Woodstock" and the cover of "Why Do Fools Fall in Love".

Commercial performance

Shadows and Light sickly at number 38 on picture Billboard 200.[2] "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" was out as a single and bounds at number 102 on class Hot 100.[2]

Critical reception

Reviews for Shadows and Light were positive.

Expressions for Rolling Stone, Stephen Holden called the album "a take aback and a triumph" and reasoned it "one of a scattering of great live rock albums".[5] Holden praised Mitchell's backing pin as "the finest ensemble become absent-minded [she] has worked with", deliver called her vocal performance "exhilarating".[5] He went on to splash the performances of "Edith alight the Kingpin" and the appellation track as "the record's water stunners", feeling that the former's "spare live setting" worked in all directions "uncover a mythic yarn be in opposition to seduction and corruption" and endless the latter's pairing with "Why Do Fools Fall in Love".[2]

In a retrospective review for AllMusic, Vik Iyengar praised the renditions on the album to befit more energetic than their works class counterparts; however, he also change that many live versions were "not different enough" than honourableness original studio versions.[3] In a- piece commemorating the album's Ordinal anniversary, The Economist called authority album "unjustly overlooked" and along with highlighted its title track, stating that Mitchell's collaboration with blue blood the gentry Persuasions gave the song "a new, organic richness".[6]
